23 Things We Learned From The Killer POV Podcast Featuring Scream Factory
Scream Factory has recently appeared on the Killer POV Podcast. The podcast was posted today and can be found Here. Scream Factory stated that this was the most candid interview that they have done. The wide variety of topics included an overall state of Scream Factory, under/over performing sales, title available/unavailable, and so much more. For those that do not have time to listen to the nearly two hour long Scream Factory interview we have compiled a list of some of the bigger highlights. Check them out:
1. Scream Factory will be releasing all IFC Midnight titles.
2. Scream Factory announced a new boxset that will be released in October. It is the Larry Fessenden Boxset and it includes No Telling, Habit, Wendigo, and Last Winter.
3. In the month of June there will be some more title announcements for release in October.
4. Scream Factory will be at Comic Con again this year and they are planning on announcing at least 10 titles that will be released at the end of this year and into 2016.
5. There is strong hinting towards a Summer of Fear sale happening, possibly next month.
6. The longer cut of the Outing (AKA The Lamp) will be on the upcoming Blu-ray Double Feature.
7. At this time Scream Factory does not have the rights for Demon Knight.
8. Universal will be releasing The 'Burbs themselves, making the film unavailable to Scream Factory.
9. Don Coscarelli owns the rights to Bubba Ho-Tep not MGM.
10. The owner of Fade to Black is rich and doesn't seem interested in responding to inquiries made to him by Scream Factory.
11. In a previous podcast appearance Scream Factory mentioned a possible boxset involving a Miramax title. That has since fallen through because the boxset was a complicated matter and involved multiple studios.
12. The possibility of a Scream Factory produced movie has been discussed.
13. There is going to a Scream Factory content push in the later months for Shout Factory's Shout Factory TV. Information on Shout Factory TV can be found Here.
14. The Babadook has been Scream Factory's bestselling release.
15. In general Scream Factory's modern releases have sold better than a lot of their retro titles.
16. Some of the better selling non Collector's Edition releases includes The Town that Dreaded Sundown, Ninja III, Terrorvision / The Video Dead, Vampire Lovers, Dark Angel, and Saturn 3.
17. Some of under performing non Collector's Edition releases includes Scanners II & III, The Final Exam, The Final Terror, and New Year's Evil.
18. Scream Factory cannot take too big of risks on some titles because they employ a lot of people (50+) and need to make sure the investment is at least recouped. As a result some titles can't be given the full treatment (new transfers, lots of extras, etc.) because the titles are not popular enough for them to make money.
19. Squirm underperformed as a standalone release which has resulted in similar animals amok titles (ex. Food of the Gods, Frogs, Empire of the Ants) to be put together in Double Feature Blu-ray releases.
20. The extras for some releases can be very difficult and requires a lot of work thanks to things like the talent being difficult and individuals working on the extras having to pay with their own money.
21. Scream Factory mentioned throughout the podcast that the more smaller cult releases (ex. Scarecrows, Howling II) need more support if fans want similar level titles to be released.
22. Scream Factory mentioned that 2016 can look a little different for Scream Factory. They seemed to be implying that the combination of some of the lesser known catalog titles not selling too well and the modern releases almost always selling well might lead to a stronger focus on modern films. Considering how many modern releases they have already announced this year it seems possible.
23. Scream Factory is continuing their push to get other studios that do not license films that often to license to them. As well, they are going to continue their relationships with the studios they currently license from.
These are only the bigger highlights of the interview. At almost 2 hours long their was a lot of information put out. I definitely recommend listen to the whole interview if you have the time.
